In Spain, sworn translations are produced by sworn translator-interpreters appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after passing a specific exam. A sworn translation gains official validity once it includes the translators signed certification, their stamp with name, authorised language(s) and registration number, plus a statement that it is a true and accurate translation.
The most common documents are birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, criminal records, academic diplomas, employment contracts, powers of attorney, and bank statements, especially for visa and residency procedures.
Apostille and sworn translation are separate processes: the apostille authenticates the original foreign document, while the sworn translation provides a reliable Spanish version; once submitted to Spanish authorities, the sworn translation itself does not need further authentication. Since 2016, sworn translations do not expire.
