Norway has its own title, statsautorisert translator (state-authorized translator), granted after passing an exam approved by the Ministry of Education and Research. A state-authorized translator confirms with their approved stamp that the translation is accurate and complete, and this stamp is accepted by foreign authorities as proof of linguistic accuracy.
A notary public, available through Norwegian courts or approved institutions, has a completely different role: confirming signatures and that documents are genuine -- a notary does not assess the content of the document itself. Cross-border documents therefore often require both services in sequence, since they cover different needs.
Common documents are birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, and business documents, often for UDI (immigration) applications or Norwegian courts.
